QUICK QUESTIONS WITH Stephen Coffey
WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT IS YOUR CONNECTION TO COMICS?
I’m Stephen Coffey, a writer, and my titles include (so far) The Society for the Remarkable Suicide, Celtic Knights, Rosemary Herbb: The Return, Rosemary Herbb and the Zodiac Ghosts, Pogoroboto, and the weekly Pogoshots strips.
WHAT COMIC ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?
A Zombie Comic which I need a title for. Any suggestions?
WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF MAKING COMICS?
People buying them and then telling you what they think of them, you take the good for your ego and the bad to make the next comic better.
WHAT’S THE WORST PART OF MAKING COMICS?
The waiting for artists to hand in work, which is why I started drawing the Pogobots.
HOW DID YOU FIRST DISCOVER COMICS?
It wasn’t until 10 years ago and the Kevin Smith Green Arrow run of Quiver, it was unlike anything else I’ve read, then I started reading Jeph Loeb’s Batman stuff with Tim Sale and I was hooked ever since.
WHO IS THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR WORK?
WHAT TOOLS OF THE TRADE DO YOU USE?
For writing I use a screenplay software and for drawing it’s all about the pen and paper.
WHAT IS THE SINGLE WORK OF WHICH YOU ARE MOST PROUD?
The Pogoroboto stuff I guess because it’s 100% by me.
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE RECEIVED?
Get trained in something other than writing, get a job other than writing, but keep writing and keep putting yourself out there, the safety net is important through the journey.
WHAT IS THE WORST ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED?
Why don’t you write for comics.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CURRENT IRISH COMIC SCENE?
I think that the community is growing stronger, and there is a much more access for new people coming into the scene, when I started there just seemed like a million obsticles in the path, but now it’s so much more cool. The people who are putting comics out now are some of the nicest people I’ve met, and have put up with a lot of rubbish from me as I adjust to the new physical obsticles in my life. It’s a great time.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN IRISH COMIC IN THE NEAR FUTURE?
I would love to see more creators under one Irish Banner and be able to be a world force without having to venture across the atlantic.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN COMICS IN GENERAL IN THE NEAR FUTURE?
I would love it if we creators could just meet up without having to wait for a convention, the only time I meet these wonderful people is at cons and those are few and far inbetween.
WHAT WAS THE LAST COMIC THAT MADE AN IMPACT ON YOU?
The Walking Dead vol 1, it was such powerful writing and a great way of doing a Zombie Comic.
FROM YOUR EXPERIENCE WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU COULD GIVE SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO START MAKING THEIR OWN COMICS? (And don’t say DON’T 🙂 )
DO! Nothing will prepare you better for your life in comics than printing a comic and then trying to sell it, you’ll learn more about yourself and the industry quicker by getting a comic out there and getting it into a shop or being at a table at a convention. Be prepared to fall flat on your face, and make mistakes, everyone does, EVERYONE! If someone tells you not to do it then that’s their fear talking. Do it, email me if you need help, I’ve nothing but time on my hands and will help you. Nothing should stop you.
ANY FINAL THOUGHTS?
No… not yet, that’s what death beds are for, and that’s usually just gas building up. Peace to everyone!
