For the 50th edition of 7 questions, it is just kind of happenstance that we have a creator who directed an Oscar nominated movie. I am delighted to present 7 questions with comic creator and director of Secret of Kells and the upcoming Song of the Sea… Tomm Moore.

What was the first comic work you did that was published?

As a teenager I published with some friends a comic anthology of our work called The Always Groovy Dreamer Comet. My story was called The Boy Who could Fly and was mentioned as a highlight in Comics World magazines review of our efforts . Much later I drew An Sclabhai for Clo Maighe Eo which was written by Colman O Raghallaigh. It was the first really professional work I did in comics and it won some awards so that was nice.

What is the biggest thing you have learned since that book?

I suppose I learnt mainly that comics are harder than they seem and that to be really fluent in comics as a visual language I should do a lot more practising!

What’s your process for drawing/writing a comic book?

I generally do a very very rough thumbnail pass for everything first and then go back and refine that over a series of revisions. I also drew each panel seperatly and compiled them back together in photoshop rather than drawing a complete page in final form – that was too much pressure for me coming from the iterative process of animation.

What is the biggest influence on your work?

In terms of comics I suppose my biggest influences have come from the superhero comics I read growing up – Frank Miller, Mike Mignola and all that late 80s and 1990s stuff. But I’m sure my everyday job as an animator and animation director is going to filter in especially Eastern European animation and the work of Genndy Tartakovsky – Bone, Madman, Love and Rockets particularly Jaime Herndandez all also contribute.

What are you working on right now?

I’m currently helping Nora Twomey with some storyboarding and concepts for her feature film The Breadwinner as well as preparing promo materials for my second feature film Song of the Sea which will be released soon.

What do you out now or coming out next?

Next from me is Song of the Sea the feature film I have been working on for the past 7 years! It will be released in Ireland next Spring.

What is your favourite Irish comic?

Has to be Stephen Mooneys Half Past danger! But I’m also looking forward greatly to Paul Bolgers Hound.
