Ferguson’s 7 Questions With… Damien Duncan

Cork week continues on 7 questions and this time we have the artist behind the cover to the upcoming Cork Sci-fi Comic Damien Duncan.

What was the first comic work you did that was published?

In the late 80s and early 90s myself and a few friends self published some Sci-Fi and horror anthologies. The first one was called ” Macabre”.

What is the biggest thing you have learned since that book?

Don’t self publish !!!! (Only kidding)

What’s your process for drawing a comic book?

I give a lot of time at the beginning of a project to research. I then do thumbnail sketches to get the flow and layout of the story right.
When I am happy with how this looks, I start pencilling each page. Next up is inking .

What is the biggest influence on your work? (Artists, writers, TV, movies)

I would say a combination of all four at different times. I take in different influences like a sponge and store it for later use.

What are you working on right now?

I am currently working on a 52 page story called “The Village ” written by Sean Leonard and James O’Callaghan for Grayhaven Comics . It is based in the early period of WW2 during the Soviet invasion of Finland. I will say no more.

What do you out now or coming out next?

My work is in 2 comic strips at the moment. They are both written by Colin O’ Mahony and will be appearing in Grayhaven Comics upcoming editions “Kaiju” and “Mosaic “. I have illustrated the cover for the Cork Sci-Fi comic no 1 coming out on April 24th.

What is your favourite Irish comic?

There are too many to choose from we are very lucky to have fantastic talent in the Irish Comic book world.
