Ferguson’s 7 Questions With… Rob Anthony

finished piston

Time for another 7 questions. Answering is an artist who will see his first published work released in the Cork Sci-fi Comic… Rob Anthony.

What was the first comic work you did that was published?

Apart from a few fanzines in the early 90’s the “Cork Sci-fi Comic” will be my first “real” published work.

What is the biggest thing you have learned since that book?

It’s best to have good clear communication between the writer, artist and editors, to be aware of the deadline, and keep in mind that the work is being re-produced so what looks great on the original page might not be the case when published!!

What’s your process for drawing a comic book?

Read script, thumbnails, design characters, read script, design settings and props, research the important elements of the story, more thumbnails, rough out the pages to make sure the story flows and that the word bubbles sit ok, read script, pencils, inking, then a little bit of editing with Photoshop or Manga Studio. Unless I’m writing my own story in which case the process is simplified somewhat.

What is the biggest influence on your work?

Definitely other artists, Hunt Emerson, Rick Geary, Gilbert Shelton and Jean Giraud (Moebius).

What are you working on right now?

My own projects that, I plan to collect and self publish later in the year…although at the rate I’m going it will be late 2025!!

What do you out now or coming out next?

I have illustrated the story “Drought” in the upcoming “Cork Sci-fi Comic.” Released 24/04/15.

What is your favourite Irish comic?

I tend to have favourite artists rather than comics as such, namely, PJ Holden, Eoin Coveney, Alan Ryan and Declan Shalvey.
