Ferguson’s 7 Questions With… Niall Best

Another Cork Sci-fi Comic creator on 7 questions. Writer Niall Best.

What was the first comic work you did that was published?

The first is the upcoming Cork Sci-Fi comic, a four page story titled Coffee.

What is the biggest thing you have learned since that book?

To work and correspond with people, it’s easy to have the vision in your mind but other peoples input can help transform it in ways you never expected.

What’s your process for writing a comic book?

I try to mash everything I’m interested in at that time into a big jumbled mess and then attempt to extract a story from it, I enjoy getting aspects of modern life and placing it in a science fiction or fantasy setting.

What is the biggest influence on your work?

Douglas Adams and 2000AD. Douglas Adams was the first writer I became obsessed with even when at seven or eight I missed half the jokes. 2000AD came a bit later at ten whilst worrying my parents slightly. Since then Doctor Who has infected my imagination a bit too much and the people that have surrounded me during my adult life contributed also.

What are you working on right now?

Nothing much at the moment, I’m playing around with a few ideas that may or may not see the light of day.

What do you out now or coming out next?

I’m in the Cork Sci Fi comic launching on the 24th of April.

What is your favourite Irish comic?

So much really cool stuff out and coming out at the moment, It’d have to be The Legend of Cú Chulainn by Will Sliney or I’m Awake, I’m Alive by Turn Coat press.
