Ferguson’s 7 Questions With… Podge Daly

Another Corkonian creator on 7 questions. Artist Podge Daly answers. Read on and check out those links as always.

What was the first comic work you did that was published?

Ten years ago back when I taught art in NUIG, I helped publish and contribute to a yearly student comic called Lunatic Fringe which was sold in the city.

What is the biggest thing you have learned since that book?

Hmmmm. Probably either the zen notion balance of speed meets quality, that and a marriage relationship with the writer for a decent finished strip both are happy with.

What’s your process for drawing a comic book?

First hash out the wants and don’t wants between the writer and artist, like a civilised divorce. Then concept draw the major characters, followed by thumbnail sketches of the panelled pages before actually working on the proper page…. then pray it all works.

What is the biggest influence on your work?

The artists that influence are Chris Bachalo, Sean Murphy and Adam Hughes. Big fan of sci fi and horror stories and flicks…. kinda Vertigo, Image, Fleetway stuff.

What are you working on right now?

That’s none of your damn business and stay out of my personal affairs…. actually I’ve got 3 books I’m about to start in order of first script, first served…can’t go into details on two as I’ve only got the pitch but one is a kids book about a budding romance between two kids…. and ones a zombie. Ya.. I said that.

What do you out now or coming out next?

A noir book for Grayhaven Comics and a sci fi skit about genetic splicing and playing god for Turncoat Press.

What is your favourite Irish comic?

Can’t say that…it’s a Sophie’s Choice..they are gettin great though for various reasons… but it’s nice to see a boom in the industry here and whatever one gets to succeed first…. ya know a rising tide raises all ships. All are great on their own merit.
