ICN Feed March: Hardcover Heaven

Welcome to the March Madness edition of ICN Feed where I mainly go mad over recent hardcover releases.

If you read our February edition of The Feed, I picked Patrick Mulholland as my 2018 breakout star. This was of course due to his excellent series Zero Jumper, which he both wrote and drew and basically did everything. Well the book has gotten a hardcover collection and, being as I’m a sucker for those, and being as I really enjoyed the series, I had to pick it up. For those who don’t know, Zero Jumper follows Juno, the last human alive, as she seeks an ancient power source so she can go back in time and save humanity. Patrick does a a superb job on art and the story manages to be a lot of fun despite the heavy background story. It’s an excellent sci-fi romp and is all ages too. Highly recommended.

Hook It Into My Veins

Another series that got the hardcover treatment recently is Declan Shalvey, Jordie Bellaire and Warren Ellis’ INJECTION. Warren Ellis is one of my favourite writers and this series is right up there with Planetary as my top Ellis books. I think this has a lot to do with Declan Shalvey (with Jordie Bellaire) being able to mix the magical with the mundane so the story never seems to be jolting when one of the characters runs into something strange. The story: Five ambitious, brilliant, crazy people tried to create something that would help humanity by helping to create the future but they created a poison. INJECTION is the story of a team of geniuses who ended the world, and then tried to save it. The hardcover is beautifully put together and, if you do pick one, I hear Declan Shalvey might do a quick sketch in it for you. I was actually thinking about this offer for a bit and I am finding it hard to pick which character I want as the creative team have come up with such an interesting and diverse cast. Right now I would go with Brigid Roth, the Irish member of the cast. Her inclusion allowed us to see some authentic Irish settings and I think Warren Ellis has really captured her Irishness. Btw, Ruth Negga is my pick to play her on screen.
